Late afternoon, roughly 90 minutes to two hours before sunset. The light is soft and golden, the sand has cooled, and the harsh midday glare that makes guests squint in photos is gone. Check the exact sunset time for your date and work backwards.

Oceanfront resorts in Hawaii, Malibu, the Hamptons and the Florida Keys sit at the luxury end, while Gulf Coast, Carolina and Great Lakes coastal properties can be considerably more affordable. Shoulder season — spring and late autumn — often cuts costs sharply while keeping good weather.
Most venues in this category are resorts or inns with rooms, so a room block turns the wedding into a weekend. Book blocks early for summer coastal dates and ask about minimum-night requirements, which are common in peak season.
Salt air and humidity are unforgiving. Choose a stylist experienced with coastal humidity, opt for updos or braided styles, use long-wear waterproof makeup, and bring a steamer — sea air wrinkles linen quickly. A change of shoes for the reception is essential.
Soft sand is difficult for wheelchairs, walkers and unsteady walkers. Ask whether the venue can lay a firm aisle runner or boardwalk, or whether the ceremony can be moved to an adjacent lawn, deck or pier that still has the ocean backdrop.
